Light_Recovery01 Service Van Technician

VR01, VR02, VR03
‘The Core Modules’

Qualified Technician providing a ‘Roadside Assistance’ service to broken down vehicles. These three modules are the minimum recommended requirement for ALL Technicians working at the roadside and are a requirement of PAS 43.

Plus VR04.1, 4.2 and 4.5
Some ‘Light’ Roadside Technicians are provided with a ‘Deployable Recovery Dolly’ mounted in the rear of the service van. The sections of VR04 and the ‘Core Modules’ listed are the minimum recommendations for those Technicians.

‘The core modules’ Plus VR04.1, 4.2 and 4.8
Recovery Technicians using a ‘light Underlift’ recovery unit are sometimes supplied with ‘Dolly Wheels’ to facilitate a ‘Total Lift’, the ‘Core Modules’ and these sections of VR04 are the minimum recommended for those Technicians.

A Recovery Technician using a ‘Light Underlift’ for the removal of ‘broken down’ vehicles, but not using the winch, other than to winch the casualty on to the recovery equipment should have these modules as a minimum.
Light_Recovery_Acc_Rec Light Recovery (Underlift) Technician (Inc. accident recovery) VR01, VR02, VR03 ‘The Core Modules’ Plus VR05 and VR07 These modules provide a Recovery Technician with the knowledge to develop their skills to carry out complex winching operations in accident situations using this type of equipment.

Where a Recovery Technician using an ‘Underlift’ is supplied with motorcycle recovery equipment then these additional modules should be trained. VR08, ‘Handling Motorcycles’ is compulsory when undertaking motorcycle training to ensure the safety of the Technician and customers.

A Recovery Technician using a ‘transporter’ for the removal or transportation of ‘broken down’ vehicles, but not using the winch, other than to winch the casualty on to the recovery equipment should have these modules as a minimum.

‘Specialist’ Motorcycle recovery Technicians can be trained in these modules for either a ‘purpose’ built recovery unit or motorcycle trailer, VR10 and VR11 would also be available, depending on the type of recovery equipment the ‘Recovery Operator’ provides. VR08 is compulsory when undertaking motorcycle modules to ensure the safety of the Technician and customers.

A Recovery Technician using a ‘Heavy Underlift’ for the removal of ‘broken down’ LGV vehicles, should have these modules as a minimum, Heavy winching is not taught on this course, as, with today’s modern recovery vehicles it is not normally required to pull the casualty on to the equipment.

Heavy Recovery (Twin Boom) Technician VR01, VR02, VR03
‘The core modules’ Plus VR14

Although virtually extinct now from the UK Recovery sector there are still some ‘Recovery Operators’ using them. Therefore the National Training Scheme still provides courses for this type of equipment.

‘The Core Modules’ Plus VR15
More and more ‘recovery Operators’ are now using large transporters and Low Loaders to recover and transport todays modern LGV’s, buses and coaches. This course provides the Recovery Technician with the skills and knowledge to use the equipment correctly and safely.
Air_Cushions Air Cushions
VR18 ‘Air Cushions’ are still used by many ‘Recovery Operators’ to aid the recovery operation of LGV’s in rollover situations. This module provides the ‘Recovery technician’ with the fundamental skills to use this equipment as part of a recovery team during a complex recovery operation.

Many ‘recovery Operators’ now use either a ‘Top Boom’ or ‘Rotator’ as their main choice for complex recovery operations, this course provides the technician with the basic skills to understand and operate this type of equipment safely, following the skills assessment on the basic use of the controls students will carry out the recovery of a fully loaded LGV from a ‘Rollover’ situation. Students will already have been trained in VR13 and VR16 prior to attending this course.
Bus_and_coach_awareness Bus and Coach Awareness VR23 This module is available for ‘experienced’ heavy recovery technicians that progress on to the recovery of buses and coaches. It is an awareness course that provides the technician with the knowledge of the construction of buses and coaches and how to avoid damage during recovery.

Lorry_Loader
Lorry Loader VR17 A widely used and highly dangerous piece of equipment, this course provides the recovery technician with the knowledge and skills to use it correctly and safely. The role of the ‘Banksman’ is also taught within this course and is ‘Assessed’ alongside the use of the equipment as well. Recovery Technicians will usually progress to this type of equipment following a suitable amount of experience within the recovery sector.

Preservation of Evidence VR19 More and more ‘Recovery Operators’ are becoming involved in the removal of vehicles from crime scenes or accidents that are required for forensic examination. This module provides the Recovery Technician with the knowledge required to carry out this important work without compromising evidence that may be required to secure a conviction.
Incident_manager Recovery Incident Manager VR21 More and more Police forces and the National Highway Sector Scheme (17) are insisting on Incident Managers having this qualification. The best communicators and not the best Recovery technicians should be selected to become an Incident Manager, together with a sound knowledge of Health and Safety and recovery techniques.
